TENIMENTI CIVA IN THE COLLI ORIENTALI DEL FRIULI, WHERE THE RIBOLLA GIALLA BLOSSOMS
Coming from Cividale or Povoletto, when you arrive on the Malina bridge there is a signpost indicating the way to Bellazoia. To reach this extreme cusp of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, take the long, narrow straight road bordered on the sides by embankments and cultivated fields.
Your gaze is immediately captured by the clearly-defined peaks of the Julian Pre-Alps, which rise to the north, and by the woods that form a shawl around the hills covered with vines. It is in this place, of such beauty as to arouse wonder and emotion in the traveller, that the Tenimenti Civa estate was established.
It all started in February 2016, in Bellazoia di Povoletto in the province of Udine. This is where Valerio Civa’s dream has taken shape: to promote and spread knowledge of Ribolla Gialla. He has dedicated an important project to the variety, and his commitment is shared by the young team that works at the winery; we in fact believe that Ribolla is the present and the future of this magnificent land called Friuli!
Valerio Civa’s commitment to the world of wine began several years ago in Parma, his hometown, where he founded Effe.ci, a distribution company of which he is now chairman. Thanks to his work, famous Italian brands of quality wine can now be found on supermarket shelves. With Tenimenti Civa he continues his work in this sector, but as a producer.
The “Ribolla Gialla Project” has also been joined by “High Quality in the Shopping Trolley”. Our aim is to offer consumers at the supermarket wines that are an expression of the land where they originated, with a good price-quality ratio. This commitment translates into a new development model for the area.
In fact, the High Quality in the Shopping Trolley project has been made possible by the precious link between the winery and some small growers in the Colli Orientali del Friuli. These men and women work with us and bring the fruit of a whole year’s work to our cellar: healthy ripe grapes picked at the time of harvest.
TENIMENTI CIVA WINES: FRIULAN TRADITION AND MODERN QUALITY
We cultivate our vines on the fragile earth of marl (clay and limestone) that the Friulans call Ponca, worked by generations of farmers and transformed into stepped terraces. The varieties are those of Friulan tradition: Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Schioppettino, and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, but we also grow Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Glera, Merlot and Cabernet. All these varieties have thrived here, giving quality wines.
The heart of production is in Bellazoia, but we are also hard at work in Ravosa – a few kilometres away – with almost two hectares planted to Schioppettino.
In the southernmost area of the DOC zone, in Manzano and San Giovanni al Natisone, we have instead created a single plot of about 13 hectares of Ribolla, probably the largest vineyard in the Colli Orientali dedicated to a single variety.
The vineyards we tend cover approximately 48 hectares of our land and 10 hectares of rented land, on generous soils that give richly-nuanced wines. Our goal is to make wines that can express at the same time both Friulan tradition and modern quality.
To achieve this, we welcome innovations in the vineyard and in the cellar, and are committed to leaving the beauty of the environment that hosts us as intact as possible.
The wines are sold through two different channels: supermarkets and hospitality – hotels, restaurants, wine bars and catering – through which our Collezione Privata line is distributed.
This is the world of Tenimenti Civa, and it will be a great honour and pleasure to share it with you!
