Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso

Biele Zôe Cuvée 85 15

HISTORY

In the 19th century numerous varieties went under the name of “Refosco”, thanks to the great prestige enjoyed by wines bearing this name; so much so that even a variety from Hungary was baptized “Hungarian Refosco”. The name Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso emerged in 1863 when a “Grape exhibition” was held in Udine. Before that date it was probably going under the name of Refoschino, by which it is still known in some towns in Friuli. The parasitic diseases that appeared in Friuli in the mid-1800s decimated many varieties, including Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. By the 1960s and 70s, the variety had almost disappeared, considered undeserving of attention since it offered low yields and was late in starting to bear fruit. Today, fortunately, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, but also Refosco Nostrano, is one of the leading viticultural assets of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
